Modern Iran or ancient Persia is an arena of exciting historical events
The main decoration of the city of Isfahan is Naksh-e Jahan Square ("Map of the World"), its other name is Imam Square (before the revolution, Shah Square). It was built in 1612. It is the second largest square in the world, its size is 500 x 160 m. On the square there are Imam and Lutfully mosques, Ali Kapu palace, as well as the endless rows of the Big Bazaar starting from it. Walk around Naksh-e Jahan Square and see half of the world.
Naksh-e Jahan Square that emerged at the beginning of the 17th century, when Safavid Abbas-Shah decided to transfer the capital of his empire from Kazvin to Isfahan, is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has a rectangular shape and is surrounded by a covered gallery around the perimeter. The main architect of the project was a mathematician, astronomer, philosopher and poet Sheikh Baha'adin Al-Amili. At one end of the square is the Imam Mosque. Opposite it is the gate of the old bazaar, although the bazaar is the entire gallery surrounding the square. On the sides of the square are the palace of Ali Gapu and the mosque of Sheikh Lotfolla.
Persian Tales: Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan
Isfahan is a garden city, the pearl of Iran. He is known for his artisans and stunning beauty of the mosques. According to legend, Isfahan was founded by Jews resettled by Nebuchadnezzar from Jerusalem. Isfahan is different from Shiraz and Yazd as a whole, and its main attraction is the huge Naksh-e Jahan square.
Isfahan is the most popular tourist city in Iran. And it's easy to see why. Ancient Islamic architecture, several UNESCO World Heritage sites at once, stunning arched bridges across the river Zayande Ruud. Gardens, mosques, shady avenues and labyrinths of markets. Breathtaking mosques. One Persian poet called Isfahan a turquoise, set in gold.
The heart of Isfahan is Naqsh-e Jahan Square. This is one of the largest squares in the world. Once Isfahan was the largest city on the planet. Travelers from all over the world were amazed at her beauty and said that "to see Naksh-e Jahan is to see half of the world". The square was built in the era of the Safavid dynasty to symbolize the power and wealth of Persia. And although several centuries have passed, tourists are still breathtaking from this place.
The ensemble of the square is formed by the main sights of the city - the mosques of Shah and Lutfully, the palace of Ali Kapu and the arched corridors of the famous bazaar of artisans. In the center of the square is a huge pool with a fountain, around which horse-drawn carriages ride. The area is really huge, and riding a horse is a reasonable option. In the summer, in the very heat in the fountain, children frolic. And after dusk, families come to the square to spread a carpet on a lawn and have a picnic. Not a single attraction can be compared with majesty and simultaneous cozy accessibility. When it gets completely dark, fountains and buildings around are beautifully highlighted.
