Waterfalls with the surroundings form the Iguazu National Park
The park is located on the border of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Every year, waterfalls are visited by more than 1.5 million tourists. Iguacu National Park is one of the last refuges for the extraordinarily rich fauna of the area, which is here called the "Mata Atlantica". In the 80s of the 20th century, Iguazu Falls became a world heritage, but local folklore made this place famous long before. There is a legend about the girl Nypi - the daughter of the leader. Brave young warrior Toroba loved the girl and won her heart. Every day their feelings grew stronger, but the leader chose Naipy to offer her as a sacrifice to the supreme god Mboi. On the night before the sacrifice, the couple ran in a wooden boat on the Iguazu River, but they did not know that Mboi was watching them. From the wrath of God formed a giant abyss. Thus, the death of Nipi and Toroba and led to the formation of Iguazu waterfalls.
The Iguazu Valley is part of a huge plateau formed by basalt lava during the Mesozoic era more than 135 million years ago. Iguazu River begins in the mountains of Brazil Serra do Mar at an altitude of 1300m near the Atlantic coast and is formed as a result of the confluence of the Atuba and Irai rivers, flowing more than 1320km to the west, falling into the Parana River. Above the waterfall complex, the Iguazu River is spread 1200 meters wide, and narrows below the waterfalls to 65m.
