Since the beginning of the settlement of the island, most of the native species of plants have been destroyed, and about half of the soil washed into the ocean. As a result, large parts of Iceland, which were covered with vegetation at the time of the Viking landing, now represent lifeless deserts of brown color, with no buildings, roads or other signs of human presence.
