Patagonia tours Argentina. A Mountain climbers at Perito Moreno Glacier. Patagonia tourism Argentina
The scale, color, shape, sound of splitting ice floes - all this is simply stunning
In the boundless plains of Patagonia, at the foot of the Andes, lies the sky-blue Lago Argentino - Argentino Lake
Here, in Los Glaciares Park (translated from the Spanish "glaciers"), a huge ice tongue with an area of 250 square kilometers and height up to 70 meters slips from the mountains. The glacier is in constant motion, and ice blocks are often detached from it, creating a roar and fantastic splashes. To every new ice collapse, people rejoice like children and wait, aiming their technique, with new falls. You see the great Perito Moreno, named after the explorer of this area Francisco Moreno. It is in the glaciers that the main freshwater reserves are concentrated on the Earth.
This glacier is not just slipping into the lake like many others, but is cut off into it by a sheer blue wall, which in some places reaches 70 meters. It is impossible not to admire these natural wonders - such power is felt in this giant clump of frozen snow by the age of 30 thousand years, it inspires such universal calm. Patagonia is a land of contrasts. Glaciers coexist with deserts and the vertical walls of the mountains rise to a kilometer height directly from the glacial plateaus.
Perito Moreno is probably the most famous glacier in the world
Perito Moreno is one of the few glaciers in the world that does not decrease, its freezing rate in the upper reaches of the mountains is not inferior to the speed of ice melting in the lake. No wonder travelers from all over the world come to admire this wonder of nature. Patagonia occupies almost a third of Argentina's territory, but no more than 3% of its population lives here. Nowhere on Earth is there such a place as Patagonia.
The thickness of the ice in some places reaches a kilometer, and the area of a number of glaciers amounts to hundreds of square kilometers. Many glaciers descend directly into lakes and bays. These are giant mountains, huge sparkling ice plains, interesting rock formations, funny penguins and very little good weather in a year. Perito Moreno Glacier is located in the Argentinean part of Patagonia, in the province of Santa Cruz.
The best time to visit the Perito Moreno glacier is also the best time to visit Patagonia as a whole and this is the local summer, that is, December, January, February. But it is worth remembering that in summer in Patagonia the temperature at night can drop to plus 3-4 degrees, and the wind can reach speeds of over 100 km / h. Also, do not trust the forecasts - the weather in Patagonia is unpredictable.
The nearest town is El Calafate. Payment should be prepared in local currency, since they do not accept foreign currencies, and the terminal for payment by card often does not work. Lake Argentina is huge - more than 100 km in length. The banks are narrow winding channels, somewhat reminiscent of the Norwegian fjords. Glaciers descend from these mountains into the channels, blocking them in places, thereby cutting off a fragment of the lake from the main body of water.
