Roman arena, Lyon, France

Gallo-Roman amphitheater and museum of Lyon

The main attraction of Lyon, located in an ancient area of the city, is the Gallo-Roman Amphitheater, built in the 1st century BC

Emperor Tiberius believed that the capital of the Three Gallium city of Lugdun is simply obliged to have its own amphitheater. The main entertainment and very popular program of this theater soon became the public execution of Christians. Here the followers of Christ were burned alive, fed them to lions and subjected to cruel torture. Each of the noble Romans who came to the city was obliged to attend mass executions. In addition, the amphitheater was a place of ceremonial actions of the imperial army. Here, the legionnaires, going to the sand of the main arena, swore allegiance to Caesar.

The official founding date of Lyon is considered 43 BC, although it is known that in this area the first settlements appeared around 600 BC. During its long history, the city has experienced many events, as evidenced by the chronicles and historical sites.

In 43 BC, the Romans established the Lugdunum camp on Mount Fourviere, with amphitheaters and aqueducts preserved here. Since the Middle Ages, the second name "the mountain that prays" has stuck behind this mountain, because of the representatives of religious communities who have chosen it. And Croix-Russ Mountain, which stands opposite - "a mountain that works": in the past, silkworm craftsmen lived and worked here. Two Lyon rivers, the Rhone and Saone, merge to form a peninsula - or "almost an island", Presquil.

Lyon is also famous for its squares; there are more than 100 of them in the city. Of these, the most picturesque and beautiful is Bellecour Square. Chestnut alleys and gardens are blooming magnificently here, and a monument to Louis XIV sits on a horse. An important landmark of the city is the 13th-century Saint-Jean Cathedral. (John the Baptist) - the main temple of Lyon.

Amphitheater at this place has existed for 2000 years

In 177, the first Christian martyrs died here, torn apart by lions. Before our time, the scene has preserved the original old floor. There are also remains of ancient buildings. The halo-roman amphitheater together with the roman aqueduct enters the zone of ancient excavations and is part of the many thousand-year history of Lyon. Here, on the Fourviere hill, next to the amphitheater and Odeon, is the Museum of halo-Roman civilization. It is a real underground treasury, where unusual decorations are kept, ceremonial carts of Gauls, Claudian tables, weapons of the harsh warriors of antiquity, unique mosaics with images of competitions and games held at a circus.
